Book Study: The Soul of the Apostolate

Youth ministry today runs fast: meetings, events, parent emails, social media, training volunteers, and so much more. The risk is that our doing can outpace our being. Dom Jean-Baptiste Chautard’s classic The Soul of the Apostolate is a direct, practical reminder that effective ministry must flow from a cultivated interior life: prayer, liturgy, and union with Christ, otherwise activity becomes hollow, exhausting, and fragile.

Why this book for youth ministers in 2026?

  • A remedy for ministry burnout. Dom Chautard names the spiritual and psychological dangers that we face - pride, anxiety to produce results, and exhaustion - and points to concrete habits that protect and replenish those who serve. That diagnosis maps closely to many issues youth ministers experience today: over-programming, performance pressure, and compassion fatigue.
  • Forms the minister who forms teens. Youth are hungry for authenticity and spiritual depth. When ministers model a rooted interior life, programs shift from entertainment to formation.
  • A supportive cohort. We are not meant to do it alone, so join this group of other youth ministers reflecting honestly about sustainable, Christ-centered youth ministry.

Short, spiritual, and uncompromisingly practical — Dom Chautard can reorient how you minister in 2026, helping your ministry become sustained channels of grace rather than frantic activity. Let’s read it together and root our work in Who matters most. We will meet weekly, starting January 14, from 9:30-11am at St. Francis of Assisi Parish for six weeks, ending February 25, skipping Ash Wednesday.

Sign up by January 6 so we can order you a book!
